Event Details

Katazome is a centuries-old Japanese dyeing technique in which artists create a resist paste from a rice flour mixture and apply it to cloth using elaborately hand-carved stencils. Wherever the paste is applied, it resists the dye, creating a pattern. In this two-day intensive workshop, students will learn the basics of Katazome, including the preparation of the resist paste, the creation of personalized stencils, the application of the paste onto silk and cotton fabric, and the dyeing of the fabric in a natural indigo vat. Students will leave with large-scale, patterned/dyed yardage.
