Carolyn Hazel Drake

Carolyn Hazel Drake is a sculptor and arts educator. As a third-generation Oregonian from a long line of craftswomen, her creativity was cultivated early on in her mother’s quilt store, as was her appreciation for handwork and being a part of a community of makers.

Carolyn studied Literature & Architecture at Portland State University’s Honors College and spent a term as a curatorial research & writing intern for the Smithsonian American Art Museum, with a particular focus on sculpture. This experience greatly informed her artistic practice. In the last few years, she has been awarded the GLEAN residency (2018), the Leland Ironworks Residency (2019) and the Suttle Lodge Artist Residency (2020).

Carolyn teaches art workshops across the Pacific Northwest, and is a longtime public educator in the arts. She taught visual art, art history, and language arts for over a decade in Oregon schools. She is currently the PPS Visual & Performing Arts Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA), where she engages in advocacy and supports best practice and professional development for the nearly two hundred arts specialists in theatre, dance, music, & visual art.
