The Right Brain Initiative & RACC

The Right Brain Initiative

The Right Brain Initiative is an innovative and equitable approach to arts education for students in the Portland, Oregon tri-county region. Our work fosters systemic transformation in teaching and learning, while positively influencing schools’ climate and culture. Right Brain weaves arts integration into existing teacher professional development (PD), supporting the use of our strategies in classrooms, while simultaneously meeting the requirements of Common Core State Standards across all subjects. In doing so, we both improve learning outcomes and provide access to the arts, encouraging creative and critical thinking for all K-8 students. Students in nearly 1,860 classrooms will be served in 2019-20.

The Regional Arts & Culture Council’s mission is broad and its influence is extensive: To enrich our communities through arts and culture. With values of equity, diversity and community, RACC is committed to ensuring that all residents have equal access to publicly funded arts and culture programs. RACC serves the tri-county region through the following programs and services each year: 1) grants for artists, arts organizations, schools, and other community-based arts projects; 2) advocacy and a workplace giving program for arts; 3) workshops and technical assistance; 4) printed and web-based resources for artists; 5) a public art program; and 6) arts education programming, including The Right Brain Initiative, for which this application applies.
